I often get asked if I have a preference. Clearly, most sailors in the BVI prefer two hulls to one.

My nuanced answer is that I love to heel and actually prefer a mono in lumpy conditions. But nothing beats the space and stability of a cat at anchor.

Which is why when money isn’t an object, you can just get one of each!

My new favorite funtivity is to use a darker ND filter than I would normally need for these conditions. This allows me to slow the shutter without overexposing, which smears out the moving vehicles.

Clearwater Beach at “sunrise.” The night before, I set an alarm and was excited to film sunrise over this beach town. When my alarm went off, I was greeted not by a crystal clear sky but by a low blanket of cloud cover. Photographers seek conditions as much as subjects. At first, I was frustrated but decided to fly anyways. This may not have been “Chamber of Commerce” weather but it’s still interesting to see this sleepy beach town waking up. Many of the hotels have elaborate LED lights; I was surprised they don’t have the same “red light” regulations for sea turtles.

It was also an opportunity to test the night mode on the DJI Air 3, and I have to say I was very pleased with the dynamic range, even at low light. I did film in D-Log M, which allowed me to recover more of the shadows in post.

Two hours after flying, the sun came out and clouds lifted. Beaches and hotel pools begin to fill with families and spring breakers, many of whom were unaware of the grey “sunrise” from earlier.

This event brought sailors from across the country to the @pinkshellresort for six days of intense training and racing on the picturesque waters off Fort Myers Beach, Florida.

Each day was action-packed with a breakfast classroom session, morning sail, lunchtime classroom and afternoon sail. The staff of legendary instructors delivered presentations on sail trim, tactics and strategy, start lines and crew management and leadership.

At the end of each day, participants gathered for a cocktail hour which also allowed time for an informal review of drone footage from the day.

On the final day, students participated in a series of races, with the winning crew recognized at an Awards Ceremony.

This event also marked the introduction of a new retrofit to the Colgate 26 fleet- a new asymmetrical spinnaker system.

The vessel is a beautiful Lagoon 450F that is now under contract.

First we splashed the boat at Conway Marine, near the famous Sponge Docks of Tarpon Springs, FL.

Next came a scenic trip down the serpentine Anclote River.

We picked up the ICW for a couple marks and then poked out in the Gulf for a long run past the beaches of Pinellas county.

At the mouth of Tampa Bay lies Ft. Desoto, a Pinellas County Park rich with nature and history.

Please note that the park does not allow drone operations on park property. The airspace above the park is uncontrolled airspace

In the next video, we’ll take the boat up the Manatee River to her berth.

Since 1971, the Seafood Shack was a community staple in the fishing village of Cortez, FL, just across the bridge from Anna Maria Island. The humble restaurant, bar and grill had a modest marina with a few spots for transient moorings and also a handful of commercial tour operators.

This marina held special importance for me as it was the first stop on my first-ever bareboat sailing trip, way back in 2019.

Over the course of five years, I returned often- sometimes as often as two or three times per month. I came so often that I used to joke about having my mail forwarded. The dockmasters Harley and George were always so helpful and accommodating to us. While I was usually there on "business" with sailing students, my family and I also made a point to visit often and looked forward to the Bradenton Beach Tree Lighting each November.

For the last couple years, a sale was rumored to be in the works. Sure enough, the county purchased the land in September of 2024 and announced plans to convert the property to a public boat ramp. Before the ink was dry on the contract, Hurricanes Helene and Milton ravaged the area and caused catastrophic damage to a property that was likely slated for demolition.

At any rate, I produced this video as an homage to the many good times had by patrons over the decades. And here's some good vibes for the property's unknown future.
